No-calorie artificial sweeteners 'mislead' the body

Artificial sweeteners, particularly in beverages, are the remedy sought and sold-to lose weight. But a growing number of studies, particularly Americans, suggest that they are not as healthy. Certainly no calories as glucose, but excessive drinking can lead to metabolic problems, heart disease, hypertension or even a rebound weight gain, says Susan Swithers, Professor of Human Behavior and Food Habits of the University of Purdue. But Swithers goes further, and in an article published in a peer group Cell Press gives an explanation: the body confuses with the taste and metabolism in improper.

The work, done in animals, points to a curious explanation: the intake of artificial sweeteners-something-breaks in the body's response would be appropriate when taking the natural sugar. This involves the production of insulin and all other metabolic processes.

What happens is that these hormones are found to have no what act, which is a metabolic imbalance. In addition, when an incoming real sugar intake, the body, churlish previous experiences, it is not believed, and unresponsive.

Although it's previous work, the first objective of Swithers is accomplished. Some of the adverse effects of consumption (always in large quantities) of sweeteners were attributed to the individual. "As I do not take sugar, I can eat this burger" exemplifies Swithers. But, of course, in animals this does not happen.

"Concern for the health of these non-caloric sweeteners is something that many people do not want to admit," says Swithers on the website of the university. "Especially because every time they take more these products." "There is great pressure from the public sector to find solutions to counter the rise in obesity and chronic disease, and there is a lot of money and business at stake for the food industry that develops and promotes these products," he adds.

"Drinks are becoming a key issue in health policy, and governments as taxes implemented to avoid sugary drinks, but most of these measures exclude drinks with other sweeteners because they are considered healthy. When political decisions are more important than ever to consider what the science says. "
